Mapping Indigenous Lands: A Participatory Approach

Mac Chapin

Mac Chapin is an anthropologist who has worked with indigenous peoples for over 40 years, largely in Latin America.  He is the co-founder and director of the Center for the Support of Native Lands (Native Lands), an NGO that assists indigenous peoples to strengthen their cultures and defend their lands and natural resources.  He has been involved with participatory mapping since 1992 and has collaborated with indigenous peoples and local villagers on mapping projects in Central and South America, Africa, and New Guinea.  Native Lands has worked with the National Geographic Society and teams of Central Americans to produce two poster-size, bilingual (Spanish-English) maps showing indigenous territories and natural ecosystems in Central America.
